Nyasha Matonhodze: From Harare to Haute Couture
Nyasha Matonhodze was just sixteen when she took the fashion world by storm.
Born in Harare, Zimbabwe on July 31, 1995, Nyasha’s story begins with a quiet life raised by her grandmother. At age eight, she moved to London to reunite with her mother—a bold single woman who had left Zimbabwe at eighteen to start a new life, alone.
That courage runs in the family.
A Walk into Destiny
In 2009, Nyasha walked into the Elite Model Management office in her school uniform. She joined their talent search—and within days, she was walking the London runway at the Spring Louis Gray show.
It was no fairy tale. There were no flashing lights or dramatic reveals.
“I was always tall and skinny,” she said. “People kept saying, ‘You should model.’ But it didn’t click until I watched America’s Next Top Model.”
That’s when the spark became a flame.
Making Forbes and History
By 2012, Forbes Africa named her #1 on its list of Top 20 African Models, beating stars like Candice Swanepoel, Grace Bol, and Ajak Deng. She had already shot major fashion campaigns, including one for Louis Vuitton, styled by Karl Templer and photographed by fashion legend Steven Meisel.
“I was in a Rolls Royce sitting eye-to-eye with Meisel,” she told The Telegraph. “That’s when it hit me—I was living a dream.”
More Than Just a Pretty Face
Nyasha’s elegance, height (5’11”), and graceful walk are undeniable. But it’s her poise, kindness, and humility that keep fashion houses calling.
She’s graced the pages of Harper’s Bazaar, Teen Vogue, V Magazine, and strutted for giants like Burberry, DKNY, Loewe, MaxMara, Carolina Herrera, and Michael Kors.
Over 90 campaigns—80 in just one year.
Let that sink in.
Behind the Glamour
It’s easy to see the glitz. But Nyasha reminds us that modelling, especially for young Black girls, comes with pressure.
“Every day you’re judged on your looks. If you’re not strong-minded, it can hit your confidence hard,” she told New York Magazine.
She knows many girls enter the industry as teens—raw, hopeful, and vulnerable. Her advice? Don’t take rejection personally. “You’re not the problem. Sometimes you’re just not the right fit.”
Staying Grounded
Fame didn’t change Nyasha. She honours her roots and carries the warmth of Zimbabwe with her.
“I still remember bathing outside. Falling asleep in the sand. The sun. The simplicity. When I came to England, I saw how they viewed Africa. And it wasn’t true.”
Her story isn’t about luck. It’s about grit, grace, and global vision.
Signed to Marilyn Agency in New York and Elite in the UK, Nyasha stands tall—not just in height, but in purpose. She hopes for a long career. She dreams of inspiring others, just like those who once inspired her.
A Voice for a Generation
Nyasha loves photography, styling, and collaborating with legends like Jason Kibbler and Daniel Jackson. She adores British stylist Katie Grand and holds a close bond with Sudanese model Ajak Deng.
And while the lights shine brightly now, she knows the runway can be unpredictable.
“One minute you’re on top. The next—it changes. That’s why I cherish every moment.”
Nyasha Matonhodze’s journey is proof that you can walk out of ordinary and step into greatness—with the right mix of courage, support, and staying true to yourself.
