More Music by Prudence at 2011 Africa Documentary Festival

The 2011 Africa World Documentary Film Festival (AWDFF) holds in Barbados this year from March 5th to May 15th 2011. Sponsored by the E. Desmond Lee Professorship in African/African-American Studies, Centre for International Studies at the University of Missouri, Saint Louis, the AWDFF promotes the knowledge, life and culture of people of African descent worldwide.


With annual submissions coming in from Brazil, Cuba, United Kingdom, Australia, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, USA, Germany, Trinidad & Tobago, Ethiopia, Somalia, Senegal, Uganda, Liberia, Tanzania, Spain, Norway, Netherlands, Eritrea, France, Israel and Canada – to name a few – the selection committee recommends a maximum of 68 films from annual submissions in excess of 300 films!

The first Africa World Documentary Film Festival (Saint Louis, Missouri & Lagos, Nigeria) commenced at the Tivoli Cinema Hall in Saint Louis, Missouri on October 14th, 2007. It opened in Nigeria at the National Arts Theatre two weeks later on November 2 and concluded on November 10th, 2007. Subsequently, the Festival has been held at the Missouri History Museum, in Saint Louis; the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination in Cave Hill Barbados; the Bermuda International Film Festival in Hamilton, Bermuda and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Saint Louis, Missouri.

In 2010 a short documentary submission, titled Music by Prudence was awarded Best Short Documentary at the 2010 Academy Awards. Music by Prudence follows the life of a Zimbabwean girl with a disability called arthrogryposis, and her remarkable transcendence from a world of hatred and superstition into one of music, love, and possibilities.


Documentaries submitted to the AWDFF should not be copyrighted or produced earlier than two years before submission. Films in a language other than English must be subtitled or dubbed in English. The AWDFF is open to the public.
